Dr. Morton C. Orman, a Baltimore internist and award-winning stress author, chastised the nation's stress educators today for "misleading, misinforming, and misdirecting" millions of Americans suffering from stress. Dr. Orman leveled his accusations at STRESS IN THE 90'S: A CHANGING WORKFORCE IN A CHANGING WORKPLACE, a four-day conference in Washington, D.C. co-sponsored by the American Psychological Association and The National Institute For Occupational Safety and Health.

"Most Americans have been sold a bill of goods about stress," claims Dr. Orman. Unlike other experts, Dr. Orman insists there is no "good" or "healthy" stress. He also says that popular approaches for coping with stress, such as meditation, biofeedback, and relaxation techniques do more harm than good.

"Many people are dissatisfied with stress management," claims Dr. Orman. "One reason is because it only addresses the symptoms of our problems. If we don't learn to deal with underlying causes as well, our stress will reoccur and put us at risk for developing ulcers, heart disease, and other serious problems."

In his book The 14 Day Stress Cure (Breakthru Publishing, $24.95), which was acclaimed an outstanding book-of-the-year in 1992 by the National Association Of Independent Publishers, Dr. Orman shows people how to eliminate stress quickly and easily without time-consuming stress management techniques. He also discusses 65 hidden causes of stress and unveils a new conceptual model for understanding human beings that challenges currently accepted mind-body theories.

"It's a tragedy today that most people are not being exposed to the truth about what stress really is and what causes it to occur," says Dr. Orman. "If every high school and college graduate understood the principles discussed in my book, we could be well on the way to ending our current stress epidemic."

Dr. Orman graduated from Duke University in 1969 and the University of Maryland Medical School in 1973. In 1982, he founded the Health Resource Network, a non-profit health education organization, and in 1987 he co-founded The Society For Professional Well-Being, a national association for preventing stress in physicians and other health care professionals.

During the past twelve years, Dr. Orman has lectured widely to health professionals and the public. He has conducted seminars and workshops for thousands of individuals, including doctors, nurses, medical students, and stress experts themselves.
